  Looks like a German Naval flag, guns on the decks and the name BUSSARD on the side. A quick Google produced this: marshall.csu.edu.au/Marshalls/html/history/Bussard.html The ship S.M.S. Bussard was a regular visitor to Sydney in the 1890s.
  That could be Bradley’s Head (Sydney Harbour) in the background, with Dover Heights beyond.

  The signature or mark on the upper right corner looks a bit strange for a western scripture. I have made a copy and mirrored it:
  
  Please note how on the upper left corner the "tag" now clearly s the number 145, as I suppose was intented

  @ Enric Martinez – The image looks fine either way, but in your version the ship’s name BUSSARD is reversed; also Bradley’s Head behind.
  
  A lot of these glass negatives have writing on the reverse of the plates (see Persistent URL). I imagine it is something to do with the cataloguing system of the photographer, and would not have shown up in a cropped print or framing mount.

  @ beachcomberaustralia : Thanks for the comment. It may be that the photos where marked on the reverse (the side with the emulsion) because it would not be practical to mark them on the part without emulsion (as pencil or ink would not remain for too long).
  
  Indeed, as this mark would not be visible in a print there was also no need to care about writing them in such a way that it would be readable from the other side…
  
  Well, that’s the amazing thing of these old photos: There are details in the details of the details.

  most of the newspapers of the period spelt the name of the gunship as Bussaid
  
  my wf’s grandfather jumped ship, from the german Bussaid in Sydney Harbour:
  
  the Gazette Notice for his absconding was:
  
  New South Wales Police Gazette, a Notice dated 20 November 1895:
  
  "HENRICH JOHENN KIRCHLER From the German man-of-war "Bussaid", Sydney, in October last. 23 years of age, 5′ 6" high, medium build, dark hair, brown eyes, high forehead, brown moustache only; wearing a German Marine Uniform at the time he left the ship"
  
  earlier he had done the same from the Moewe:
  
  New South Wales Police Gazette dated 19 June 1895:
  
  "HEINRICH JOHANN KIRCHLER From the German man-of-war "Moewe", on the 12th June, 1895, 23 years of age, 5′ 6" high, dark hair, brown eyes, oval face, medium build, clean shaved except moustache, speaks German only. Kirchler wore a German marine uniform when he left the ship."
  
  The Bussaid was in Sydney Harbour from 5 Sept to 15 October 1895.
  
  The Bussaid didn’t last past the Great War
  
  "Stricken on the 25th October 1912 and broken up in 1913"
  
  The Moewe though went on the be a successful German raider, and post war, a tramp steamer, under the name Greenbrier.
  
  Anyone have a photo of Moewe please?
